About the course

This course briefly describes the various types of bees, but focuses on the bees primarily husbanded for honey and hive produce (Apis mellifera), and narrows it down to the African honey bee (Apis mellifera adansonii). You will learn about the six hive products: honey, beeswax, royal jelly, bee venom, bee bread or pollen, and propolis. This is done for each hive's output. You will also learn what factors to consider when establishing a bee farm, also known as an apiary. There is more focus on the African Honey Bee taking into consideration its defensive and honey production capabilities. Students will learn more about suitable locations, hive preparations and installation, orientation of hives in an apiary and basic colony management.
